Anduze pots first appeared in sixteenth century France and were exclusive to the wealthy and privileged. In the Anduze region in the early 19th century, affluent families of the local silk merchants began placing orange trees in the pots in their gardens. This allowed them to bring the trees inside during winter months to protect against the frost.
